Ujjain Travel Guide
How I Stayed Safe in Ujjain (And How You Can Too)
Ujjain is generally a safe and welcoming city, especially for pilgrims—but like any popular destination, a little awareness goes a long way. During my trip, I realized that simple precautions made the experience smooth and stress-free.
Here’s exactly what worked for me:
1. Stay Close to Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga
I chose accommodation within walking distance of the temple, and it made a huge difference.
- Early morning visits (like Bhasma Aarti) felt safer and easier
- No need to depend on transport at odd hours
👉 The temple area is usually crowded and well-patrolled.
2. Avoid Isolated Areas at Night
- Most of Ujjain feels calm and safe,
- but I avoided Empty streets late at night
- Quiet riverbank spots after dark near the Shipra River
👉 Stick to well-lit, busy areas—especially if you’re traveling solo.
3. Keep Your Belongings Secure
Temple crowds can get intense. I kept things simple:
- Used a small backpack instead of carrying valuables
- Kept wallet and phone in front pockets
- Avoided carrying too much cash
👉 Pickpocketing isn’t very common, but crowds make it possible.
4. Use Trusted Transport Options
For getting around, I relied on:
- Auto-rickshaws with agreed fares beforehand
- Hotel-arranged taxis when possible
👉 If you’re unsure, ask your hotel for approximate pricing to avoid overpaying.
5. Be Careful with “Guides” and Touts
Near temples, I was approached by people offering:
- VIP darshan
- Special पूजा packages
👉 I politely declined unless it was through official counters. Always verify before paying.
6. Keep Emergency Contacts Handy
I saved:
- Local police number
- Hotel contact
- A family member on speed dial
👉 Even though I didn’t need them, it felt reassuring.
7. Follow Temple Rules and Dress Modestly at Ujjain Temple
- Dress respectfully (covered shoulders & knees)
- Follow entry rules strictly
👉 This avoids unwanted attention and ensures a smooth darshan experience.
8. Eat Smart & Stay Hydrated
Stick to eating at places that are :-
- Clean restaurants or hotel food
- Bottled water only
👉 Street food is tempting, but choose busy and hygienic stalls.
